Beijing hotel fire - life imitating sitcom?
A fire has gutted the megamillion Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Beijing. This is a bizarre story, mainly because it could have been avoided by watching a sitcom.
The fire was allegedly started by fireworks set off by China Central Television as their own addition to the celebrations marking the end of the lunar calendar. This jovial jape soon turned from a 'great idea' to... Well - to this:
CCTV are in the shit so deep so many ways for this, it can scant be measured in normal terms. A fireman died fighting the blaze, millions of yuan up in smoke and the TV company had apparently been specifically told NOT to set the fireworks off in and around the hotel complex.
Now, sure, I don't blame them for going ahead and holding their party and sticking it to the man, but, jesus - don't these guys watch 30 Rock?
Yes, CCTV - take heart. For while you may have screwed the pooch, eaten it, then screwed it again 12 hours later, you can always fall back on the knowledge that you were walking in the footsteps of the Great Jack Donaghy.
